These brass burner plates are parts of lanterns found on the Williams farm. At night, lanterns would have been a welcome source of light for the Williams family, particularly for studying and reading. Since there was no electricity in most rural areas of Texas until the 1930s, farm families depended on lanterns and candles to provide light inside their homes.
