Stones from features such as this hearth as well as pieces of pottery vessels were analyzed for fatty acids that might indicate whether plants or meats were cooked within them. In the example shown, Feature 9 from the Varga Toyah component, two stones contained fatty residues identified as plant and animal. The great majority of returns from the site, however, indicated cooking or processing of plant foods rather than meat. This may suggest that meat was eaten raw.
