Laboratory equipment used for lipid, or fatty acid, analyses. The Gas Chromatograph separates the individual components of the residue sample. The instrument is equipped with two different detectors: a Flame Ionization Detector (FID) and a Mass Spectrometer (MS). Component identifications made with the FID are based on comparisons with standards. Components passing into the MS are identified with the computerized NIST Mass Spectral database.
