The editor of The Gold Dollar, the first African-American newspaper in Austin, published the alphabet to encourage education in black families. This issue is from August 1876. Even though it is a little blurry and hard to read, the alphabet and other educational materials in the newspapers were probably prized by black families to help educate their children. Books were hard to come by, and it is unlikely that African-American schools received much in the way of books and supplies to work with.
