Stepping Back in Time: The Case of the Ancient Sandals

Of course, Indians living in these caves couldn't just stroll over to the neighborhood shoe store and buy a pair of sandals. They had to make their shoes from the plants they gathered. Those Indians were smart—very smart. They knew just what kinds of plants were strong enough to create a tough pair of sandals.

Most sandals were made from the long leaves of the yucca plant.
The yucca plant was used for many different purposes. Its bulb (at the plant's center) could be baked for one to two days and then eaten. Gee, if they had to bake it for that long before they were tender enough to eat —well, you understand why it was perfect for making sandals!
