Discard pile. This flat layer of 12 rocks (Feature 25 at the Britton site) may be a boiling stone dump, based on the shape and size of the stones. In the cooking technique known as “stone boiling,” hot rocks were added into containers of meat and liquid to cook the food into a stew. Other discard pile features may be expended rock from earth oven cooking.
