The massive outcrops of banded silicified dolomite overlooking the Canadian River near Fritch were visited in 1845 by Army Lieutenant J. W. Abert, who recognized abundant evidence of stone quarrying and tool making. Abert called the area “Agate Bluffs,” but today it is better known as the Alibates National Flint Quarries.
