Woven mat fragment with bird design found in a large Early Caddo tomb at the Mound Plantation site along the Red River in northwest Louisiana. The mat fragment was preserved only because the tomb was waterlogged. According to early chroniclers, the Caddo were famous for their woven mats. Deceased individuals were often laid to rest on such mats. Courtesy Pictures of Record.
