Eight French cannons found at Fort St. Louis, and now on display at the Museum of the Coastal Bend, Victoria, Texas (right). Made of cast iron, three of the cannons are termed three-pounders, three are four-pounders, and two are six-pounders; they weigh from 700 to 1200 pounds each. Buried by the De Leon expedition after the French settlement was destroyed by the Karankwa, the cannons owe their remarkable preservation to the dense clay soil, which kept moisture and oxygen away.
