Nineteenth-century farming was much different than modern mechanized farming. This photograph shows a freedman farmer in Rusk County using a one-row, horse-drawn plow in the winter of 1895-1896. The wooden fence marks the edge of the cultivated field and his house is in the background. Image is reproduced from Wade 1984. Original image was published in "Views in Texas, 1895-96", by Henry Stark and A. C. Greene.
