This photograph from the Library of Congress collection was taken around 1900, but its location is not recorded. It shows an older African American couple sitting by their fireplace in a log cabin. The walls and fireplace mantle are papered with newspaper and magazine pages. A broken cast iron tripod pot is suspended over the fire, and the table to the left has china and silverware, a salt shaker, and other tin containers on it. A black dog is curled up and sleeping at the woman's feet. The man is wearing a domed-crown derby hat (also called a bowler hat), a style popular in the late 1900s and at the turn of the century. Such hats sold for between $1.35 and $3.00 in the 1895 Montgomery Ward and Company catalog, and for $1.50 to $2.25 in the 1902 Sears, Roebuck and Company catalog.
