The 1860 slave census for Hays County lists three slaves on the J.W. Bunton plantation, including a 14-year-old mulatto boy who may be Ransom Williams. Prior to Emancipation, most slave schedules did not include names of the enslaved individuals, only age, gender, and color. They were listed under the names of their owners. As a consequence, researching African American family history prior to 1865 is very difficult.
