This 1880 Hays County map depicts the John G. McGehee League, a Mexican land grant dating to 1835 and surrounding leagues in the southern Travis and northern Hays counties. The Williams farmstead was established south of Bear Creek in the McGehee League at about the same time that the freedman community of Antioch Colony was established in a different league in northern Hays County. Established in 1877, the Rose Colony School for African Americans became the core of the freedman community of Rose Colony, and the town of Manchaca sprang up there after the railroad came in 1880.
