A roughly horizontal band of clouds bisecting the earth are storms formed at the intertropical convergence zone (ITCZ). As this image shows, the atmospheric boundary between the northern and southern hemispheres cannot be as perfectly divided in two halves as the geographic boundary (the equatorial line).
