These two lumps of asphaltum (Feature 9) appear to be a single dried mass weighing over two pounds that had broken in half in prehistoric times. Natural asphaltum can be found along the Gulf beaches and the Morhiss find proably represents raw material brought inland. The caption of this photograph from a WPA progress report says: "They were apparently in a bag of some sort. Careful cleaning may reveal weave pattern or tell us [the] material of which [the] container was constructed." TARL Archives.
