The locations of oyster reefs in the Galveston Bay area are limited by salinity - they require moderate levels as can be seen from this map showing the average surface salinity for 1965-67 (as expressed in thousands of parts per million). The oyster reefs, which appear in black, are found in the mid-bay areas as the heads of the bays are too fresh and the areas near the mouth of the bay and passes are too salty.
