Image of Cocos, one of the Karankawa-speaking groups.
Cocos, one of the Karankawa-speaking groups, as depicted by Lino Sánchez y Tapia, apparently based on a sketch made by Jean Louis Berlandier of Indians made during a Mexican scientific expedition into Texas from 1828-1829. The highly stylized painting shows a Spanish mission in the background. In the late 1720s the nearest mission to the Karankawa territory would have been Mission Espiritu Santo at its third location on the Guadalupe River near Victoria. From The Indians of Texas in 1830 by Berlandier.
