Some
of the foods eaten by prehistoric people may seem very odd to us today.
The stalks from a spikey Agave plant (top, left) were cooked for a sweet-tasting
and nutritious food. At the top right, a young child tastes a strip of buffalo
jerkey. At bottom left is a mash of cooked bulbs from another sharp-leaved
plant, the lechuguilla. After cooking, cholla cactus (shown sliced, at bottom,
right), still may not taste good, being rather sour.
