Holding a long wooden pestle, a Caddo Indian woman is processing foods inside a wooden mortar. Nuts or seeds were put inside the mortar (the hollowed-out bowl) and were crushed or ground with the pestle (the long stick.) It takes longer than the few seconds required by today's food processors, but it got the job done. (Painting by Nola Davis, courtesy Texas Parks and Wildlife, Caddoan Mounds State Historic Site).
