Photo of the excavation
Crew members excavate a patch of mussel shells within the Main Block. This patch of shells, called Feature 9, was discovered near the bottom of Zone 2 at 2.6 feet (80 centimeters) below the surface. In all, eight patches or concentrations of mussel shells were found in Zone 2. They ranged from 6 to 20 feet (2–6 meters) across and were only a few inches thick. They also contained snail shells, animal bones, and stone tools and flakes, along with charcoal, burned rocks, and burned clay from nearby hearths.
