Shoalwater Bay

Idealized Rockport Black, "Shoalwater Bay" motif vessel. Adapted from Weinstein 2002, Figure 7-30.
Image of Shoalwater Bay.

This is a rather unique motif represented by a single, wide, horizontal black band that circles the upper part of the interior portion of shallow bowls and/or plates.  The lone example in the current collection occurred on a rim sherd that also exhibited black coating on its top and interior portions.

Similar, though not identical, designs are illustrated in Thomas Campbell’s 1958 study of the Live Oak Point site.  One drawing clearly includes a horizontal band on the interior of a shallow bowl or plate, although several vertical wavy lines also are present.  Another shows two horizontal bands on what probably is the exterior of the vessel.
