Shoalwater Bay

Idealized Rockport Black, "Shoalwater Bay" motif vessel. Adapted from Weinstein 2002, Figure 7-30.
Image of Shoalwater Bay.

This is a rather unique motif represented by a single, wide, horizontal black band that circles the upper part of the interior portion of shallow bowls and/or plates.  The lone example in the current collection occurred on a rim sherd that also exhibited black coating on its top and interior portions.

Similar, though not identical, designs are illustrated in Thomas Campbellā€™s 1958 study of the Live Oak Point site.  One drawing clearly includes a horizontal band on the interior of a shallow bowl or plate, although several vertical wavy lines also are present.  Another shows two horizontal bands on what probably is the exterior of the vessel.
