Along with raids by bandits, Indian attacks continued to plague settlers in the Nueces Strip, particularly during the Civil War years. In May of 1861, two of the state's well-known Indian fighters were ambushed and killed by a band of 20 Indians near Chalk Bluff on the Nueces River.
