Net Weights
Perforated oyster shells such as these may have been used as weights for woven fiber fishing nets. Tied along the edges of the lightweight nets, the heavy shells provided the weight needed to enable fishermen to throw them more effectively. Oyster (Crassostrea virginica) were both an important tool and food source and were easily obtained in bays, saltwater lagoons, and estuaries. Photo by Robert Ricklis.
