A field covered in spring beauty (Claytonia virginica) flowers. The edible tubers of this plant may have been among the root foods dug by the Spanish explorer, Cabeza de Vaca, and his cohorts. This scene is in the Post Oak savannah northeast of San Antonio, but the plant is common in many parts of south Texas and the coastal plains.
