The interior surfaces of Rockport pottery vessels were sometimes coated with asphaltum to ensure a water-tight seal, as illustrated by partially reassembled basal section of a large pot recovered from the Kirchmeyer site near Corpus Christi. Fine drying cracks can be seen in the asphaltum layer (not to be confused with the larger cracks created as the vessel broke apart into sherds). TARL Archives.
