Wooden barrels, boxes, and casks were used to carry supplies and other goods for use on board ship and in the colony. Smaller casks, such as the one shown, may have held liquids—water, wine, or brandy. Many bore only traces of their contents, such as fragments of clothing and foodstuffs. Other containers were recovered still packed with items such as lead shot, muskets, axes, gunpowder, glass beads and other trade goods.
