Fish were important resources for native peoples living along the rivers and larger streams in the region. They could be speared, poisoned, netted, and trapped. Among the larger fish species found at Hinds Cave are long-nosed gar (Lepisosteus osseus), river carp sucker (Carpoides carpio), smallmouth buffalo (Ictiobus bubalus), flathead catfish (Pylodictus olivaris) and channel or blue catfish (Ictalurus sp.). The bones of small, minnow-sized fish were also found in several coprolites, suggesting that these may have also been regular dinner items.
