| Yards of
gravel line the Sabinal River bed in front of the shelter,
where the water flows underground within limestone cracks
and joints much of the time. The gravels were an important
resource for prehistoric peoples, providing flint cobbles
(chert) to make into tools and weapons and limestone to
use for food grinding and to pave the shelter floor. Photo
