Reconstruction of a pithouse. Although no one is certain what the superstructure of the Hueco Tanks pithouses looked like, some researchers suggest they were constructed of wooden poles and branches and at least partially covered with adobe plaster. The model depicts a pithouse from the late Mesilla/Dona Ana phase Los Tules site in New Mexico, shown in a display at the Centennial Museum, University of Texas at El Paso. Photo by Susan Dial.
