Post surgeon John Lauderdale and his family at Fort Davis in the late 1880s. Lauderdale came to Fort Davis from Fort Clark, after most of the fighting in the Trans Pecos had ceased. Based on Lauderdale's accounts, he spent much of his time supervising the making of ice and treating soldiers suffering chiefly from "too free use of alcohol."
