Hafted Dart Point Analysis: Specimen 5

Specimen 5 (96745-2) from Ceremonial Cave is a small dart made on hardwood foreshaft with sinew wrap enclosing the chipped-stone point. At some time, the dart was repurposed as a knife or other cutting implement: the point has been heavily resharpened, and proximal end of the shaft has been blunted. Portions of the sinew wrap have been gnawed off by rats; the proximal shaft area bears the typical incisor marks of wood rats. Type classification of the point is possible Carlsbad (although there are similarities to types Palmillas and San Pedro). Peabody Museum, Harvard University. Photo by Laura Nightengale.
