Hafted Dart Point Analysis: Specimen 2

Specimen 2 (46808-705) from Ceremonial Cave is a small dart made on smoothed and polished hardwood foreshaft with sinew wrap. A sample from foreshaft exterior has been dated to 400-210 B.C. Based on examination by CT scan, the chipped-stone point is classified as type Carlsbad. The distal tip apprently was broken off during impact; the point has been reworked by beveling along both sides and over part of the break area, perhaps in an attempt to repoint the projectile.
